CSC
2006: THE LONG RANGE PLAN AT MIDPOINT
A
five year blueprint for the club's future ("CSC 2006") is
well underway thanks in large part to your feedback in the 2001 survey.
The plan embraces five key action areas:
Collaboration
with Other Harbor Organizations
CSC members have completed several significant linkages with other
harbor entities:
-
John
DeWaal and Andy Norman opened up joint efforts with the rowing club
in supporting the seafaring "Ernestina" project
-
Bob
Deutsch forged a coalition with the harbor fisherman association
to protect mutual interests on the usage of Government Island
-
Lucia
Flibotte and Ann Musto initiated social and racing activities with
the Yacht Club
In the future you will likely see us:
-
Develop meaningful ties with the new Cohasset Center for Student
Coastal Research at the Haggerty building. This could conceivably
include winter classroom programs and sequenced summer programming
between the two organizations
-
Augment
further rowing related activities with the rowing club
Tightening
of Safety Practices: 28 New Policies
Commodore Bob Deutsch led the CSC Executive Board in developing comprehensive
policies aimed at increasing the safety of our members. The completed
initiatives included:
-
drafting
of 28 new policies related to the waterfront, injury prevention
and reporting, instructor to student ratios, staff hiring and training,
instructor and member code of ethics, offender background tests,
etc.
-
hiring
of an adult dockmaster to oversee weekend operations
-
requiring
all sailors to pass the Helmsman's Test prior to using a boat during
"free sail time."
Going forward the new policies will need:
-
refinement
on the policy details as they go through implementation
-
education
of staff to carefully implement the related procedures
Improvement
of Sailing Curriculum: 27 New Children Helmsmen
Sandy Crough, Vice Commodore for Children's programs has spearheaded
many changes in this area including:
-
adopting
the Helmsman's Test as a progress measure
-
implementation
of a mentor program which led to a record 27 children passing the
Helmsman's Test
-
using
smaller sails so children can use sailboats in more varied wind
conditions
-
focussing
on retention of children participants which led to a four fold increase
in the number of 12 year olds("Skipper Class")
Future plans include:
-
extension
of the mentor program to all children's sailing levels
-
greater
flexibility in scheduling
Bob Cunningham, Vice Commodore for Adult Programs, orchestrated
several modifications. Bob:
-
changed
the Stanton Series to a four Sunday schedule coupled with post race
picnics. This change led to a tripling of participation.
-
retooled
the curriculum for the adult intermediate level(thanks to Jack Keniley's
input)
-
expanded
the number of adults who raced in the Flying Scot program.
Future
initiatives under consideration include:
-
restructuring
of the adult basic curriculum and
off-season
classes in various marine topics
Updating
the Boat Fleet
Ann Musto diligently worked to increase the competitiveness of the
racing fleet by:
-
integrating
the new boats into the racing program
-
refurbishing the eight Turnabout boats. She hopes to increase the
number of racing boats to accommodate the rise in the pool of children
wishing to race
-
increasing the number of regatta participants representing the club
regattas
-
involving more parents in regatta logistics
Future planning will likely include:
-
balancing
the club mix of racing and recreational boats reflecting our varied
membership interests
-
developing
better storage for boats both in and off season
-
fundraising
for new boats and upgrade for the launch
-
a
decommissioning of older boats as they reach their end point
Club Facility Changes
Through Brian Connors' leadership and support from others, the club
has successfully:
-
upgraded
lighting, electrical systems and locks
-
beautified the grounds(thanks to Sue Cunningham and her helpers)
-
installed dockside plumbing(hats off to Larry Mitchell for the work)
-
replaced
the launch engine
-
completed an inspection survey of our buildings
-
hooked the plumbing to the town sewer.
Future changes will likely include:
-
upgrade to the windows and sliding doors
-
roof replacement and painting
